The timing problem

Snow removal is the only trade where every customer needs the same person on the same morning. Posting at 6 am after eight inches fell puts you in line behind everybody else who did the same thing.

The fix is boring and it works: line somebody up before the season, and message them when the forecast turns rather than when the snow lands.

What to arrange in advance

Settle these once, in writing, and the actual storm is a two line message.

• The rate, and whether it is hourly or a flat price per clearing.
• What counts as a callout. Two inches, four, or your judgment.
• How much notice you will give, and by what time in the morning.
• Exactly what gets cleared: driveway, walk, steps, a path to the meter.
• Who supplies the shovels, the ice melt, and the blower if there is one.

What it should pay

Snow work pays above general labor almost everywhere, because it is cold, urgent, and physically brutal. Check your metro on the Daily Pay Finder and pay above the general figure.

An early start, a holiday, or a storm that is still falling all justify more. Somebody at your house at 5 am in a blizzard is worth what you agreed to pay them.

The safety part is real

Shoveling heavy snow is one of the more strenuous things a person can do, and cold makes it harder on the heart. Give people breaks and do not push anybody to finish faster.

Supply ice melt for the paths and expect the work to take longer than a dry day would. Ice underfoot is how a shoveling job becomes an injury claim.

Keep the same person all winter

The person who cleared your drive in December already knows where the edge of the flower bed is and where the ice always forms. That is worth more than a couple of dollars an hour.

Message them directly when the forecast turns, pay on the day, and leave the review. That is how you have somebody in February when everybody else is refreshing a job board at dawn.
