General labor is a doorway, not a ceiling

Most people who work in the trades started by carrying things for somebody who was doing the skilled part. That is still how it works, and it is the cheapest apprenticeship available.

Pick one trade and take those jobs on purpose

Taking whatever comes teaches you a little of everything and none of it enough to charge for. Pick one thing that interests you and looks steady in your area, and take those jobs whenever they appear.

Drywall, concrete, framing, tile, and painting all have a lot of day work attached and all pay above general labor once you can do the skilled part.

Learn on the job, deliberately

The people who move up do the same four things on every site.

• Ask why, once, at a moment when nobody is busy.
• Watch the person doing the skilled part instead of only watching your own hands.
• Learn the names of the tools and the materials, because that is how you sound like somebody who can be trusted with more.
• Ask at the end of the day whether they need the same help next time.

The cheap credentials worth having

An OSHA 10 card takes a day and opens sites that require it. A driver license, a clean record on a lift, or a forklift certification each move you into a better paid pool.

None of these is a four year apprenticeship. They are days, and they pay for themselves quickly.

Update your profile as you learn

Add each skill as you can genuinely do it, and let the reviews build up under it. Employers search by trade, so being listed for drywall is what gets you drywall work.

Do not list what you cannot do yet. Being sent home on the first morning follows you further than a missing skill does.

Then charge for it

Once you are doing the skilled part rather than helping with it, take the jobs posted for that trade rather than general labor, and look up what it pays before you accept.

That is the whole path, and it takes months rather than years: general labor, one trade chosen, jobs taken on purpose, skills listed, rate raised.
