How Many People Do You Need to Unload a Truck?

The carry decides everything

An unload is not really about the truck, it is about how far each item travels once it leaves the tailgate. Ten feet into a garage is a completely different job from a hundred feet and a flight of stairs.

Measure the carry first, then pick the crew size. Everything else is detail.

Rough numbers

For boxed goods or palletized freight broken down by hand, with a dock or a level tailgate height.

• A 16 foot truck, short carry, two people, one to two hours.
• A 26 foot truck, short carry, two people, two to four hours.
• The same 26 footer with stairs or a long carry, three people, three to five hours.
• Furniture rather than boxes, two people minimum on every piece.
• A container or trailer with no dock, add a person just for the tailgate.

When a third person actually helps

Three works when the carry is long enough to run a chain: one in the truck, one moving, one stacking. On a short carry the third person waits, and you paid for waiting.

The other case is a hard deadline, like a rental truck due back or a driver on the clock. Then the extra person is insurance, not labor.

What speeds it up more than another body

A dolly or a hand truck, ramps if there is no dock, a clear path with the doors propped, and somebody who knows where things go so nothing gets moved twice.

Say in your post whether there is a dock, an elevator, or stairs. That one line is what makes the estimate accurate.

Book the hours honestly

Two hours booked for a four hour unload is how a day goes wrong at hour three, when somebody has another job to get to.

Say the expected finish and what happens if it runs long. Most people will stay if they knew it was possible and the rate for extra hours was agreed.
