Saying Yes to Rush Work When Nobody Else Can

Same week availability is the cheapest competitive advantage in the trades. Most of your competitors are booked out and telling people no.

Urgent customers pay and they remember

A burst pipe cleanup, a storm cleanup, a tenant moving out Friday, a job the last contractor walked off. Those customers are not price shopping. They are calling down a list looking for anybody who says yes.

Being the yes on that call is worth more than any advertising, and it usually comes with a customer who calls you first from then on.

Why everybody else says no

Not because they cannot do it. Because their crew is committed and adding people used to take a week: call an agency, wait for a callback, hope somebody shows.

That is the part that changed. A job posted at nine at night gets answered the same evening by people who can be there in the morning.

What to have ready so you can say yes fast

The operations that take rush work have these settled in advance.

  • A rate for short notice work that you are comfortable quoting on the phone.
  • A short list of people who have worked your jobs before.
  • A job post you can copy, edit, and put up in two minutes.
  • A payment method already set up, since same day work is paid same day.

Price the urgency, without gouging

Short notice, weekend, and holiday work all pay above the going rate, and the customer expects that. Pay the workers above the local figure too, because that is why they will come at short notice.

The one thing to avoid is a number the customer will resent later. A fair premium buys a repeat customer; a bad one buys a single job and a review.

Be specific or nobody comes

For a same day post, the details do the work: the date, the start time, the rate, the address area, and how many people.

Answer fast when people reply. On rush work the first employer to respond usually gets the crew, and the same is true in reverse.

Turn the emergency into the relationship

At the end of the job, ask the customer what else they have coming. Somebody you rescued on a Wednesday is the easiest sale you will ever make.

And tell the workers who showed up that you will call them again, then actually do it. That bench is what lets you say yes the next time.
